Why do manufacturers mount their engines with the exhaust coming out the front of the block?

Motorcycles (and I guess the cars too? No, now that I think of? L) with l engine? Nea always seem to have mounted rev? S - with the exhaust coming out the front and the product to come inside the rear. I don 't understand this at all.
