What are the keys to creating a fictional language?

I am writing a history of fantasy in it, there are words and phrases that my characters are not used in the “common” language. To them, I want to have consistency and ensure that there is a certain “realism” to the language I'm creating. The best I can think about is my limited knowledge of Spanish and how words are formed, how they mean, etc.. I am using this as my base form of the verb. (I hope that makes some kind of sense?) ¿Anywho, what is the best ways / keys to establish their language for fiction?
